My first experience with Platypus Egg occurred at a San Diego (Santee, really) bar called the Second Wind. As they were playing on the stage, I noticed that I couldn't feel my face--and I hadn't even had one White Russian yet! They literally blew my face off with their ecclectic mix of funk, metal, and overall beautiful music. Their vocal harmonies are tighter than anything I've ever felt. Some people like to call them "circus rock." I like to call them amazing. Since then, the band has performed locally in venues throughout San Diego including the infamous Che Cafe, nearby in Los Angeles, and at Phoenix, Arizona's SHIZZFEST.
Platypus Egg began with Andre Beller and Kris Calabio performing songs with lyrics set to videogame music at a local San Diego open mic. Kris's twin brother Mark Calabio and high school friend Michelle Louden would soon join them, and the group would perform various covers including Disney songs, Beatles, and Mr. Bungle among other things.
In a circus-themed open mic, the band would perform their first original song "The Dirge of Captain Diddles." Shortly after, the group would record a demo CD that would contain live favorites "The Four of Us Are Dying" and "Unconventional Love." Finally, drummer Michael Bongiovanni, or "Bonjo" as we like to call him would join to complete the ensemble.
The band is currently working on their first album which should be released by the end of the year.
